SFMix 007: George Earnest
The Berlin-based artist uses this reflective mix to reflect the langour of the past year.
Musical metamorphosis is a common procedure for artists. George Earnest is no different. He has shed the skin of electronic music and started to spread his wings within jazz arrangements. Drum pads and synthesizers have been replaced with saxophones and pianos.
2018’s A Dreaming Island on Dublin’s Pear imprint, a string of releases under his G.E.O Corp alias, and the Time Heals All Wounds project alongside Der Opium Queen were all indebted to 90s house and its delicate grooves. And an uncanny knack for composing yearning numbers was clearly demonstrated.
Although a tranquil disposition remains, this natural development from house to jazz has been propelled by social restrictions and enforced confinement.
“I haven't been able to stomach dance music really at all this past year,” Earnest says, “and the constant slew of livestreams of people banging out club tunes while everyone's at home has sort of put me off. This mix is a lot of music I've been into lately that's the polar opposite of that. Most of it is jazz or at least jazz influenced, but I tried to keep it contemporary while still representing a few standards. I'm a big believer in musical context being paramount to DJs, so I've tried to make something that fits the context we're all stuck in.”
