SFMix 011: Gary
The hypnotic inclination of the Dublin-based DJ shines through in this undulating mix.
Gary (real name James Byrne) is an impressionable character. He attributes most of his inspiration to those he surrounds himself by, which is rather refreshing in a world where many idolise those that they’ll never meet – those that they’ll never truly know. The absurdity of fandom becoming increasingly exposed.
This disposition naturally bleeds into his future aspirations. “The idea of organising something,“ he says, “which benefits the community in a local way has always been attractive for me and I hope that throughout the next year(s) that is something I can work towards.”
And while Dublin is experiencing a watershed moment, with clubs opening up post-pandemic and archaic licensing laws being reviewed, Gary is aware that work still needs to be done “from the ground up and structurally at the top” in order for young artists to flourish in the city.
The 22-year-old has always been in awe of selectors that can “seamlessly transition between songs,” and this mix showcases his ability to emulate those he adores, traversing from downtempo bass to transcendent acid.
